Topics for Master’s Thesis Project

Below is a suggested topic area for exploration. You may use it to shape your thesis proposal or propose your own idea that aligns with our business interests.

Topic 1 – ESG Consulting

Background

European Union (EU) sustainability legislation increasingly affects companies of all sizes—even startups. The Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) puts startups under pressure to align with investor sustainability due diligence. In addition, the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will soon require nearly all physical products (e.g., electronics, textiles) sold in the EU to comply with stricter ecodesign criteria. However, it is unclear that how severely startups will be affected, which sectors will experience the greatest challenges, and what strategies can enable effective and resource-efficient compliance.

Possible Thesis Directions

  1. Impact Analysis of EU ESG Legislation on Startups: Which types of startups in Denmark or across the EU are most exposed to upcoming EU ESG legislation, what the scale of affected firms is, and what are the expected economic and operational impacts with startup-specific case studies?
  2. A Startup-fit Double Materiality Assessment (DMA): How can existing industry practices in Double Materiality Assessment be adapted into a lightweight, scalable framework suitable for resource-constrained startups?
  3. Integrating ESG Compliance into Startup Strategy: What are the most effective approaches for embedding ESG compliance into early-stage business strategy without hindering innovation or growth?

Expected Outcomes

  • A sector-specific impact map showing which startups are most at risk or most likely to benefit from EU ESG legislation.
  • A practical DMA toolkit for startups (e.g., processes, guidelines, or templates).
  • A strategic roadmap/practical process for integrating ESG compliance into impacted startups’ business models.
  • Academic contributions to the fields of sustainability, entrepreneurship, and regulatory compliance

Topic 2 – AI

Background

The growing complexity and volume of EU ESG regulations create significant challenges for consultants and professionals who need to stay informed and provide accurate guidance. Regulatory documents are often lengthy, technical, and frequently updated, making it difficult to efficiently extract the most relevant information. To address this, the project focuses on developing an advanced chatbot that leverages retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). By integrating comprehensive and up-to-date regulatory databases, the system will retrieve contextually relevant materials and generate clear, accurate, and reference-backed responses. This tool is designed to support both ESG consultants and enthusiasts by streamlining regulatory navigation, improving reasoning quality, and ensuring timely access to trusted information.

Possible Thesis Directions

  1. Data Processing: Developing robust methods to process ESG regulation information into retrievable entries. The information may include regulatory documents, official (Frequently Asked Questions) FAQ documents, and insight pages from trusted sources. The documents can be complex, involving text, tables, figures, and legal references.
  2. Building Retrieval-augmented Generation (RAG) Pipeline: Building a RAG pipeline that would efficiently integrate the existing databases for retrieval, chat responses (e.g., answer, reasoning, reference) and be self-sufficient (not relying on the prompts).
  3. Large Language Models (LLMs) Comparison: Analyzing the performance of open-source and commercial LLMs within the RAG framework, based on the answer quality, reasoning depth, and accuracy of references.

Expected Outcomes

  • A retrievable ESG regulation knowledge database system with enriched information.
  • A robust, credible RAG pipeline that can answer compliance questions to primary sources.
  • A refined answer generation mechanism that effectively processes the retrieved information.
  • Academic contributions to the fields of LLM, NLP and RAG.
  • Practical experience in AI application development.
